Democrats have taken control of the United States Senate and the House of Representatives. The party secured a net gain of four seats in the upper chamber and three in the lower house. These results end a period of unified Republican control in Washington.
Annie Andrews won the Senate seat in South Carolina. She defeated Republican Darline Graham in an upset. Andrews is a doctor and the first woman elected to the Senate from that state. She is also the first Democrat to win the seat in more than twenty years. Graham had been appointed to the position in July after the death of her brother, Senator Lindsey Graham.
Democrats flipped a Senate seat in North Carolina as well. Rep. Chris Pappas won the open seat in New Hampshire. He defeated former Senator John Sununu. In Georgia, Senator Jon Ossoff won reelection against Rep. Mike Collins. These victories moved the party closer to the majority threshold.
In the House, Democrats defeated six incumbent Republicans in key races. Rep. Tom Kean of New Jersey lost his seat. Three Republicans in Pennsylvania also lost reelection. Those candidates were Ryan Mackenzie, Scott Perry, and Rob Bresnahan. Democrats won open seats in North Carolina and Kentucky. Rep. Jamie Ager beat Republican Jennifer Capps Balkcom in North Carolina. This was the first House flip for the party.
Voters expressed deep dissatisfaction with the national direction. An Associated Press poll found that about three-quarters of voters feel angry or dissatisfied. Three-quarters said the economy is not good or is poor. About eight in ten voters said inflation caused moderate or severe financial hardship for their households. Roughly half of voters cited government corruption and the cost of living as crucial factors in their decision.
President Donald Trump backed Darline Graham for the South Carolina seat. He campaigned in several conservative states. However, his party struggled to turn out low-propensity voters. Trump posted on social media that he was not on the ballot and that his party would have won in a landslide if he had been.
The Republican party held a money advantage during the campaign. They spent tens of millions of dollars in states Trump won two years ago. They also engaged in an aggressive redistricting effort. In Florida, Republicans moved two Democratic representatives into the same district. Both Democrats won in different territories. This included Rep. Kathy Castor in metro Tampa.
Several states have elected new governors. Democrats won reelection in Pennsylvania, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, and New York. In Georgia, Keisha Lance Bottoms will become the first Black female governor of any state. In Florida, Byron Donalds became the first Black Republican governor. In Ohio, Democrat Amy Acton defeated Republican Vivek Ramaswamy.
Democrats will now hold the power to investigate the executive branch. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries is positioned to become the first Black speaker of the House. He outlined a 100-day agenda focused on lowering the cost of living. The new majority will also have the ability to pursue impeachments of administration officials.
More than 59 million people cast ballots before election day. This number surpassed early-voter turnout from 2022. The results mark a significant shift in power for the final two years of the current administration.
