Mark Fletcher Jr. ran two yards for a touchdown on fourth down with 7:49 left in the fourth quarter. That score put No. 1 Miami ahead 35-35. The Hurricanes then held on to defeat North Carolina 38-35 at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C. on Saturday.

The win keeps Miami unbeaten at 8-0 overall and 6-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. North Carolina drops to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the conference. The Tar Heels are now 0-12 against teams ranked No. 1 in the AP Top 25.

Fletcher finished the night with three touchdowns. After his final score, Miami’s defense made a critical stop to seal the game. Marquise Lightfoot stripped the ball from behind as Billy Edwards Jr. attempted a pass. Justin Scott recovered the fumble with 5:33 remaining.

Miami’s offense extended the lead after the turnover. Elija Lofton made a leaping catch to move the chains. Darian Mensah then threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Malachi Toney. That score made it 38-28 with 2:33 left in the game.

Mensah threw for 274 yards and three touchdowns. Toney caught two of those scores. Fletcher caught the third. North Carolina’s Edwards threw for a season-high 341 yards and four touchdowns. Tight end Jelani Thurman caught two of those passes.

The Tar Heels offense sustained long drives throughout the night. One drive lasted nearly eight and a half minutes and consisted of 16 plays. That effort kept North Carolina within striking distance late in the fourth quarter. Edwards said the game came down to critical moments against a top-tier opponent.

Miami’s defense struggled to stop drives on offense. The Hurricanes gave up their highest point total in regulation this season. Miami had to recover an onside kick in the final minute to run out the clock. North Carolina had two recoveries negated by penalties before that final sequence.

Miami coach Mario Cristobal said the team kept playing through the chaos. He noted that the fumble recovery swung the momentum. Miami prepares for a road game against No. 5 Notre Dame next Saturday. North Carolina travels to UConn next week.
