Kylian Mbappe scored 22 goals during the 2026 World Cup in North America, setting a new all-time record for the competition. The total puts him ahead of Lionel Messi, who holds 21 career World Cup goals, and Miroslav Klose, who has 16. Mbappe used this milestone to argue for the Ballon d'Or ahead of the ceremony scheduled for Monday in London.

The award covers the 2025-26 season, a period in which the French forward failed to win a major trophy at either the club or international level. Real Madrid finished second in La Liga and were eliminated by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals. France placed fourth at the World Cup, losing to Spain in the semifinals and to England in the third-place playoff. Despite this lack of silverware, Mbappe believes his individual performances warrant the top prize.

His statistical case extends beyond the World Cup. In La Liga, Mbappe scored 25 goals to finish as the top scorer. He also netted 15 goals in the Champions League, leading the scoring charts in that competition as well. "I was top scorer in all the biggest competitions, and I think that this could be a good year for me, and I really feel it," Mbappe said. He noted that being the all-time top scorer in World Cup history distinguishes him from other candidates.

When asked who he would vote for if he had the decision, Mbappe answered, "Myself." He emphasized that individual performance and memorable moments are key factors for voters in this type of award. "They won't announce a team in the envelope; they will announce a player," he told RFI. Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho also supported the forward, stating that the team knows who made history that summer and that this player is not from PSG or the Spanish national team.

However, his competitors have stronger trophy hauls. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and the La Liga title with Barcelona. Harry Kane of Bayern Munich secured three trophies last term, including the Bundesliga championship. In contrast, Mbappe’s bid relies heavily on his goal-scoring records rather than team success. This approach deviates from recent trends, as every Ballon d'Or winner over the past decade lifted at least one major trophy in the year of the award.

The most recent precedent for a trophyless winner is Cristiano Ronaldo. In 2013, Ronaldo won his second Ballon d'Or after Real Madrid finished as league runners-up and Portugal failed to advance past the World Cup playoffs. Ronaldo scored 66 goals that season, a total that helped break Lionel Messi’s four-year winning streak. Ousmane Dembele won the 2025 award after helping PSG secure their first Champions League title, while Rodri won the prize in 2024 after leading Spain to the Euro title and Manchester City to the Premier League.

Mbappe has been nominated for the award nine times previously. His best finish was third place in 2023. The current race tests whether voters will prioritize record-breaking individual statistics over collective success. The ceremony will take place in London on Monday, where the final decision will be announced.
