Fourteen consecutive Central Section championships define the Clovis West girls basketball program, a record that Ryleigh Schoonover helped extend before transferring to Fresno State. The former Golden Eagle is now preparing for her first season with the Bulldogs women's team, a move that keeps her within the local area.
Schoonover chose to remain close to home rather than attend a school outside the valley. She noted that wearing the team's uniform carries a specific weight for residents of the region. "To wear that valley 'V' on your chest, it's something different," Schoonover said. She added that people living outside the valley often do not grasp that sentiment.
Fresno State coach Ryan McCarthy identified Schoonover as the top local talent in the 2026 recruiting class. He stated that her performance during evaluation confirmed that assessment. "In my opinion, Riley was the best player in the area for her class of 2026," McCarthy said. "Riley came in and proved that right away."
The new roster addition brings experience from a program where winning is the baseline expectation. Clovis West coach Craig Campbell explained that the team aims to compete for the title annually. "We want to be good every year," Campbell said. "We're not going to win it every year, but we want to be knocking on the door every year."
McCarthy expects that intensity to translate immediately to the college floor. He noted that Schoonover has operated under a standard where victory is the default goal. "She played with a very good high school basketball program here, and all they did was win," McCarthy said. "And so, that's the expectation when she sets out on the floor."
Schoonover credited Campbell for preparing her for the physical and mental demands of the Pac-12 conference. She described the consistency required at both the high school and college levels as identical. "Everything is the standard," she said regarding the preparation she received from her former coach.
The Fresno State season begins in less than two weeks with a matchup against UC Merced. Schoonover will make her college debut at the Save Mart Center. Campbell believes the player is still developing her full potential. "I think that's one of the things that's so exciting for Coach McCarthy and the staff is she's just scratching the surface on what a gifted player she could be for them," he said.
