Arsenal and Manchester City now sit level at the top of the Premier League table after both clubs played on Saturday. Arsenal secured a 2-0 victory over Everton at the Emirates Stadium in heavy rain. On the same day, Manchester City suffered their first defeat of the season by losing 2-1 at Aston Villa.

The match in north London began quickly. In the seventh minute, Martin Odegaard delivered a corner that Jordan Pickford initially saved. The ball rebounded to Ezri Konsa, who tapped it in from close range. This goal marked Konsa's first for the club and Arsenal's first set-piece goal in 13 games. Ben White and Gabriel combined for the second goal in the 68th minute. White played a pass to the far post, and Gabriel headed the ball into the net during his 200th Premier League appearance.

At Villa Park, Nicolas Jackson scored twice to secure a 2-1 win for Aston Villa. Jackson opened the scoring in the sixth minute after John McGinn set him up. Erling Haaland equalized for City shortly after halftime with a header from Iliman Ndiaye's free kick. Jackson restored the lead in the 60th minute by finishing a cutback from Ibrahim Mbaye. The win moved Villa to sixth place with 11 points and ended City's unbeaten start to the campaign.

Both leaders now have 21 points after eight matches. Manchester City faces an ongoing financial dispute, having been found to have committed 114 breaches of league rules by an independent commission. The club is currently appealing that decision. "It's just the beginning; we're trying to work game by game," Jackson said regarding his team's season.

Results elsewhere in the league shifted the lower standings. Tottenham Hotspur defeated Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge. This was Spurs' second league win at that venue in 36 years. Cole Palmer was sent off in the 80th minute, and Mathys Tel scored the final goal in the 87th minute. Fulham also won 1-0 against Coventry City. Oscar Bobb scored the only goal in the 80th minute to lift Fulham to 13th place.
