Jack Campbell, who signed an $81 million contract extension just six months ago, was strapped to a backboard and carted off the field on Sunday night. The Detroit Lions linebacker sustained a serious injury during the team's Week 8 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. He was transported to a local hospital for evaluation of a neck injury.
The incident occurred on the first play of the fourth quarter. Campbell and Eric O'Neill tackled Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson, after which Campbell went limp. While lying prone on the turf, he moved his head up and down and pulled his body forward a few inches. Trainers reached him shortly after, and he remained on the field for approximately 10 minutes before being loaded onto the stretcher.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell told reporters after the 19-15 victory that he had no further information on Campbell's status other than confirming the player was receiving medical care. The scene at Ford Field was emotional as the entire Lions team gathered to see their teammate off. The defense also paused to rally after watching one of their leaders go down.
Campbell enters the 2026 season as one of the highest-paid off-ball linebackers in the NFL. He was selected with the 18th overall pick in the 2023 draft out of Iowa. In the previous season, the 26-year-old recorded 176 tackles, nine tackles for loss, five sacks, three forced fumbles, and four passes defended. That performance earned him a First Team All-Pro selection and his first Pro Bowl bid.
In seven games this season, Campbell has recorded 57 tackles, two quarterback hits, and one fumble recovery. The Lions did not release a specific diagnosis following his transport to the hospital. He remains under evaluation as the team prepares for its next contest.
