Carter Corrigan crossed the finish line in 15:27.3 to win the District 1/2 4A Boys Cross Country Championships at Lakewood High School on Saturday.
The Jackson sophomore defeated Skyline senior Yashveer Brar by pulling ahead during the final curve. The two runners entered the last 250 meters of the race neck and neck. Corrigan had used the same strategy one week earlier at the Wesco Championships, where he outkicked his opponent to take the title. He told reporters he saw the identical race position and decided to rely on his finishing speed again.
"Exact same position (last week)," Corrigan said. "I was able to outkick him, so I thought, 'I know I can do this again.' And if this kid took it out early, I know he's not relying on his kick, and I was relying on mine. So I figured that was the right spot to go get it."
Jackson assistant coach Marc Dugenet noted that Corrigan stayed with the front pack during the first mile. The coaching staff believed in his ability to finish strong, so maintaining a position to strike later was part of the plan. Dugenet described Corrigan as a gamer who puts himself in a spot where he can succeed. He said the junior said he was going to do the same thing because it worked for him.
Corrigan improved his time from the previous season by nearly two minutes. Last year at districts, he finished in 17:17.7 to place 53rd. That race ended a freshman season marked by illness and injury, during which he ran 15:48.3 just over a month prior. Corrigan credited consistency and daily running for his development. He focused on recovery and proper training to build his fitness over the year.
"I think it's just consistency, running every day," Corrigan said. "Built back up my fitness, a lot of recovery, doing the right stuff, not being lazy and just making sure I can get the right recovery, and just train the right way."
The Jackson team placed fourth, earning one of the five available spots for the state meet. Junior Logan Rusher placed 16th with a time of 16:01.5. Junior Asher Yochum placed 23rd in 16:09.6. Senior Jordan Schatz placed 54th in 16:46.0, and freshman Maximiliano Rosas placed 58th in 16:48.7. These four runners, along with Corrigan, made up the top five for the Timberwolves.
Corrigan will compete in the 4A State Championships in Pasco next week. It is his first time at the state meet. He does not expect to win in a loaded field but aims to podium. He plans to use the same mentality as his recent races, potentially sticking with Brar to find a good group and secure a strong result.
