Barack Obama ridiculed the Trump administration's trade strategy from a stage in Cleveland on Saturday. Speaking to a crowd of Democratic supporters in Ohio, the former president targeted the ongoing tariff dispute with Canada. He framed the North American neighbor as an unlikely adversary in a global conflict.

"The big trade war he's starting now is with that well-known evil empire: Canada," Obama told the audience. He continued by listing cultural exports to emphasize the absurdity of the conflict. "These are the people who gave us maple syrup and Martin Short," he said. "They're the nicest people."

Obama characterized Canadians as friendly neighbors to the north. He questioned the logic of picking a fight with such an ally. This critique fits into his broader campaign efforts for Democrats ahead of the November midterms. He argued that tariffs have raised costs for American consumers, a trend many economists predicted.

The rising price of goods has created pressure on Republican candidates, especially in border states. On Friday, Donald Trump announced plans to lift tariffs on certain Canadian products. This move signals a potential shift in the administration's stance ahead of the election.

Dominic LeBlanc, Canada's trade minister, told CBC's Power & Politics on Friday that Ottawa does not expect a final deal before the November 3 vote. The two countries have exchanged retaliatory tariffs since Trump launched his levy campaign last year. Officials initially justified the measures as a response to fentanyl trafficking and trade imbalances.

Negotiations between the two governments collapsed in August. Trump has frequently mentioned Canada during his own campaign stops. At a rally in Highland Heights, Kentucky, on October 17, he promised a future deal that would be amazing. He also criticized former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, calling him a loser to cheering crowds.

Trump then addressed current Prime Minister Mark Carney. He described Carney as a nice guy who becomes less so during trade discussions. "They're learning and they're suffering," Trump said, indicating that the pressure of the tariffs is producing results.
