Mbappe scores twice as Real Madrid beats Barcelona 2-1

Kylian Mbappe scored two goals on Sunday night to help Real Madrid defeat Barcelona 2-1 at Camp Nou. The victory snapped Barcelona's nine-game winning streak in the Spanish top flight and gave Real Madrid the lead in the all-time head-to-head record.

Mbappe's brace brought his career total for Real Madrid to 100 goals across all competitions. He has scored 14 goals this season and is currently the second-best scorer in La Liga. The milestone occurred one day before the Ballon d'Or ceremony in London, where Mbappe is considered a frontrunner for the award.

The result marked the first league defeat for Barcelona this season. Had they won, the Catalan club would have broken Real Madrid's record for the best start in the Spanish top flight, set in 1968-69. It was also Barcelona's second straight loss, following a recent defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

Real Madrid now hold a 107-106 advantage in the all-time Clasico record. The win extends their current winning streak to five matches, comprising three victories in La Liga and two in the Champions League.

Manager Jose Mourinho, who returned to the club after a 13-year absence, described the performance as a statement of intent. He noted that his team is playing to win the championship, not just individual matches. Mourinho has not won a league title since his time at Chelsea in 2014-15, but he previously led Real Madrid to three trophies during his first spell.

The win moves Real Madrid closer to the top of the table. After ten matches, the team sits third in La Liga with 24 points. They are three points behind Barcelona, who lead the league, and one point behind second-place Atletico Madrid.

Mbappe is 27 years old and joined Real Madrid from PSG in 2024. He was the top scorer in La Liga and the Champions League last season, in addition to winning the Golden Boot at the World Cup. His current form positions him strongly for individual honors this season.
