Dale Brown, the head coach who established Louisiana State University as a perennial national basketball power, died on Friday, Oct. 23. He was 90 years old. His passing occurred just 48 hours after the university announced his selection for the 2027 John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award, a distinction recognizing his lasting impact on the sport.

Brown spent 25 seasons at the helm of the Tigers from 1972 to 1997. During that tenure, he compiled 448 victories, the highest total in the history of the school. His teams secured four Southeastern Conference regular-season titles and qualified for the NCAA Tournament on 13 occasions. The program’s peak came with Final Four berths in 1981 and 1986, periods that transformed the local fanbase and national perception of the team.

His coaching roster included future NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, and Rudy Macklin. Brown’s methods relied on community engagement and resilience. He traveled across the state to promote the sport and build support. In 1979, his squad captured the first SEC title for LSU since 1954. Two years later, the team advanced to the national semifinals. Brown earned the Associated Press National Coach of the Year award in 1981 and was named the conference’s top coach on four separate occasions.

Brown’s family issued a statement describing him as a humanitarian who prioritized others over himself. They noted that he "always led with the heart" and that he had developed a deep affection for Louisiana. Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry posted on X that Brown "put LSU Basketball on the map," while sports writer Marc J. Spears called him "an extraordinary human" who offered valuable wisdom in their discussions.

The university has already institutionalized Brown’s legacy. In 2022, LSU named the floor inside the Pete Maravich Assembly Center Dale Brown Court. The following year, the venue was renamed Dale Brown/Sue Gunter Court to honor both former coaches. Brown was also inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame and the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.

In a 2025 interview with WAFB reporter Chris Nakamoto, Brown recounted a 1981 game against top-ranked Kentucky. With all five starters fouled out, he told his bench players, "From now on you are not substitutes, you are backups." The team won the contest. Brown credited his mother with teaching him to do what is right, warning that an excessive focus on image can tarnish character.

Brown was born on Oct. 31, 1935, in Minot, North Dakota. He died eight days before he was scheduled to turn 91.
