DJ Akademiks stated that rapper Drake is set to sign the largest advance in music history.
Drake finished a $400 million contract with Universal Music Group this year. He is now a free agent seeking a new label. Akademiks told listeners on his NFR podcast that the next deal will eclipse previous records. He described the new agreement as the "biggest record deal in history, on the books in terms of what they would have to pay him in advance."
Drake released three albums in May 2026. The projects were titled Iceman, Habibti, and Maid Of Honour. All three albums entered the top three spots on the Billboard 200 chart upon release. Despite the high chart positions, none of the tracks became commercial hits.
The rapper's market position changed after Kendrick Lamar released the song "Not Like Us" in the spring of 2024. Lamar's track criticized Drake and affected his reputation. The source compares Drake's current status to Ja Rule in 2003. This comparison suggests that labels may hesitate to pay top dollar for an artist facing public criticism.
Academiks continues to promote Drake as the greatest artist of all time. He believes the rapper will secure a historic payday regardless of recent events. Music executives will evaluate Drake's sales data against his public image. They must decide if his star power justifies an advance that breaks existing industry records. The final contract terms have not been announced.
