The NFL has announced that Jay-Z will headline the halftime show at the Super Bowl in February 2027. The performance will take place at SoFi Stadium. The booking follows an arrangement his entertainment agency, Roc Nation, secured in 2019 to book the league's annual lineup. The deal carried a $25 million payment. Roc Nation has curated the halftime talent for seven years.
Jay-Z is not the first rapper to play the halftime show, but the announcement marks the first time an act has secured the slot through its own booking arrangement. The 2027 performance comes after a year in which the entertainer addressed a civil lawsuit filed against him and Sean "Diddy" Combs as co-defendants. The rape allegations were recently recanted. Jay-Z denied the allegations from the start and filed a defamation and extortion suit against the filing attorney, Tony Buzbee, which an appellate court dismissed. Combs also denied the allegations and was sentenced to more than four years in prison on prostitution-related charges.
In March, Jay-Z told GQ senior associate editor Frazier Tharpe, "We played enough defense, 2026 is all offense." He released a vinyl reissue of Reasonable Doubt exclusively through Target while a grassroots Black boycott of the retailer was underway over its reversal of DEI policies. Addressing criticism at a concert, he rapped: "They say I sold out. Yeah, I did sell out. Three nights. I sold Yankee Stadium the hell out."
The Super Bowl booking has drawn criticism from figures in and around hip-hop. Former hip-hop journalist Touré recently said, "Over and over, Jay is the one that powerful whites use to quiet Negro protests so they can make more money together," comparing him to a house Negro who aligns with the power structure while claiming to represent Black advancement. Video essayist F.D Signifier places Jay-Z within the "Black misleadership class." Colin Kaepernick has described Jay-Z as the "Black face" used to whitewash the NFL's image; Jay-Z has not responded to those comments.
In the final episode of the HBO documentary Jay-Z in 8, which he co-executive produced, Jay-Z criticizes figures he calls "race hustlers" and "house Negroes" who act as "extortionists" that "go to one place and say: You want our support? Give us the money." He added, "We're not getting it as a race together. We're slowly getting there separately, but it's not a concerted effort of us to align our powers and our finances to benefit our community."
The documentary pairs Jay-Z with former Def Jam founder Rick Rubin for listening sessions covering his catalog. The eight episodes include his account of confronting his father, who left the family when Jay-Z was 11, one month before his death. Jay-Z addressed allegations involving Tony Buzbee and the Target release during 2026. He also sold out Yankee Stadium for three consecutive nights. The Super Bowl halftime show is scheduled for February 2027 at SoFi Stadium.
