Binance, the largest cryptocurrency exchange globally, announced on Thursday that it is investigating a security incident with an estimated total impact of $6.3 billion. The company suspended all deposits and withdrawals to conduct security checks and freeze funds. This pause in operations affects millions of users who rely on the platform to trade digital assets.

The exchange stated that its initial investigation suggests a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop allowed an attacker to access a service container. This access enabled the submission of unauthorized withdrawal transactions. Binance reported that it has frozen approximately $3 billion of the affected assets on-chain with the help of blockchain partners. The company noted that it found no evidence of a wallet private key leak.

Changpeng Zhao, the platform's founder, addressed the incident on X on Thursday. He stated that while he no longer manages the company, the event "does look like a hack on Binance." Zhao assured followers that "User funds are safe!" and added that, as a shareholder, he expects all user funds to be fully covered. Zhao pleaded guilty to a felony in 2023 related to money laundering failures and was pardoned by President Donald Trump in 2025.

Major stablecoin providers responded quickly to the breach. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said on X that the company froze more than $1.5 billion in currency related to the incident. Jeremy Allaire, co-founder and CEO of Circle, wrote that his company froze more than $800 million in currency in coordination with law enforcement. Both firms acted to prevent the stolen funds from moving further through the financial system.

A Binance spokesperson said in a statement that the company's teams are working around the clock to resolve the issue. The statement emphasized that user funds are completely safe and that the security teams are reviewing all relevant information with urgency. The company promised to provide updates through official channels once it has verified information. It plans to share more technical details once the investigation is complete.

The news affected the wider market. Bitcoin prices dropped 3.2% on Thursday evening, falling below $79,000. The price movement reflected investor reaction to the size of the potential loss. Binance is working closely with law enforcement, issuers, and blockchain intelligence firms to trace and freeze additional assets. The company has not explicitly confirmed that funds were pilfered but indicated the impact is substantial.
