A prominent Democratic senator who has positioned himself as a leading figure on foreign policy and executive oversight is recovering in a hospital after suffering a stroke. Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., was taken to a local medical facility on Saturday afternoon after he began to feel numbness in his arm while attending his son's hockey game.
Allison Herwitt, Murphy's chief of staff, confirmed the diagnosis in a statement released on Sunday. She reported that he was moved to Johns Hopkins for continued monitoring. Herwitt stated that he is responding well to treatment and that the office expects a full recovery.
Murphy, who is 53 years old, has been a visible voice in the party during the current midterm campaign cycle. He recently completed a tour of the Middle East. Following that trip, he warned that President Trump would significantly escalate the war on Iran once the elections concluded. Murphy is often discussed as a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential race.
His hospitalization adds to a pattern of health issues affecting members of Congress this year. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., spent several months in the hospital and undergoing rehabilitation earlier in the year. Rep. Tom Kean, R-N.J., was absent from the Capitol for a similar duration while receiving treatment for depression.
The 2022 election cycle also saw multiple high-profile stroke cases among Democrats. Sen. Ben Ray Lujan of New Mexico, Sen. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, and then-candidate John Fetterman were all hospitalized for the same condition that year.
