An eight-bedroom mansion on Cherry Street in San Francisco sold for $28.5m on October 22, 2026. The final price exceeded the October 2 listing price of $18.5m by $10m, setting a new record for the city.
The property, located in the Presidio Wall neighborhood, was constructed in 1966. The Whisler-Patri firm designed the home, which SF Gate identified as one of the city's most active architectural offices. The residence features a private garden and a three-car garage, a footprint that the listing described as unusually large for the area.
The sale occurred against a backdrop of rising housing costs attributed to the artificial intelligence industry. High salaries in the sector have increased demand for housing, making it difficult for residents with six-figure incomes to find affordable options, as reported by The Guardian in early October. The San Francisco Chronicle noted that competition has intensified at the top of the market.
Data from Compass, cited by the San Francisco Chronicle, shows that more than 140 homes sold for at least $1m over asking price during the first six months of 2026. That number was eight in the same period a year earlier. In September, nearly 92% of single-family homes sold above asking price.
The Cherry Street property had remained in one family for more than four decades. The San Francisco Business Times reported that the Janice R Lurie Trust and Robert A Lurie Trust sold the home. Robert Lurie previously owned the San Francisco Giants.
