Abel Garza, a 30-year-old U.S. Border Patrol agent, was charged with first-degree murder following the stabbing death of his wife, Mayra Alejandra Landeros, 28. The incident occurred in south Laredo, Texas, just before 3 a.m. on Wednesday.
Laredo Police Chief Miguel Rodriguez stated that officers responded to a call regarding a man knocking on doors for assistance. Upon arrival, a police drone observed a vehicle departing the scene. Officers intercepted the car and discovered Landeros lying on the back floorboard with serious stab wounds. She died later at a hospital.
Garza, the driver of the intercepted vehicle, was detained by authorities. He now faces two additional counts of endangering a child and two counts of abandoning a child, all second-degree felonies. Law enforcement confirmed that two children were found safe at the residence during the search.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection confirmed Garza serves as an off-duty agent with the Laredo Sector. The agency announced that its Office of Professional Responsibility is reviewing the case. Garza was transported to Webb County Jail, where a bond of $1 million was set.
Joe Baeza of the Laredo Police Department noted that the agency is coordinating with the District Attorney’s Office to finalize the charges. Landeros’s death is recorded as the sixth homicide in Laredo for the year 2026.
