The Southwest Florida Sharks claimed their second consecutive United Grid League championship in Lakeland, ending the season as the league's first back-to-back winners. The title represents a shift in the competitive landscape of the coed circuit, where teams battle in head-to-head functional fitness and weightlifting events.

Sedona Townsend, a 27-year-old physical therapist from St. Petersburg, was part of the roster that secured the win. This was her fourth season in the sport. The league operates with mixed-gender teams, and athletes compete in a variety of events including deadlifts, bench presses, handstand walking, and backflips.

Townsend competes as a utility player. Her role focuses on functional movements such as box jumps, burpees, and pull-ups. The team structure mirrors traditional team sports, with a coach, a manager, and a full roster. Each athlete is assigned to one of three categories: utility, bodyweight, or strength. Every match consists of 11 distinct races.

Her path to the professional level began with soccer. Townsend played the sport at Southeastern University in Lakeland and Evangel University in Springfield, Missouri. She later transitioned to CrossFit training, which emphasizes strength and conditioning. A local coach identified her during a competition and recruited her based on her athletic capabilities.

"I was competing in a local competition and that's when my coach found me and recruited me just based off of my athletic capabilities," Townsend said. She noted that the Grid League differs from CrossFit because it is a team sport rather than an individual pursuit.

The team maintains a structured communication plan to support their performance. Townsend described their routine, which includes group chats, meetings, and Zoom calls. "It's like, even outside of your daily life, you're committing to this one thing for the people around you," she said. The back-to-back victories have demonstrated consistency for the group.

Townsend is aiming for a three-peat in the upcoming season. She stated that her primary goal is to enjoy the process. "As long as I'm having fun doing it, I'm going to stick with it," Townsend said. The team travels for competitions, which she credits for building new friendships.
