New College of Florida reached the number one spot for liberal arts institutions in the state according to Niche's 2027 rankings released today. The university also posted its highest historical standing in the 2027 Forbes Best Colleges in the U.S. list, placing 82nd among public institutions nationwide.

Three specific metrics drove the upward movement in the Niche report. The college earned an A grade for Academics, a category that carries a 35 percent weight in the total score. It also received A grades for both Diversity and Professors. These marks helped the school climb to number 3 for small colleges in Florida and number 9 for public universities in the state.

Richard Corcoran, the president of New College of Florida, attributed the results to the institution's academic standards. "We do not chase rankings; we chase excellence," Corcoran said. He noted that the college requires students to defend their ideas and conduct original research. Corcoran described the new rankings as a byproduct of an institution that demands high performance from its faculty and students.

The university has held a B+ overall grade in the Niche report for six consecutive years. This cycle marks a historic high for the college across both major ranking services. The school's specific placement includes number 12 for all colleges in Florida and number 59 for liberal arts colleges in America.

Niche introduced a new Institutional Success Score for the 2027 methodology. This metric accounts for 5 percent of the final ranking. It assesses colleges against peers with similar missions rather than using a single national standard. The change aims to recognize institutions that excel within their specific educational frameworks.

Founded in 1960, New College of Florida is the state's designated public honors college. It operates on a 151-acre campus on Sarasota Bay. The university offers more than 50 undergraduate majors and graduate programs in Applied Data Science, Marine Mammal Science, and Educational Leadership.
