Barack Obama addressed a crowd in Ohio on Saturday to rally support for Democratic candidates in the upcoming midterm elections. He focused his remarks on the financial and strategic costs of the administration’s foreign policy, specifically referencing the conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran.
The former president described the war as unnecessary and a decision made by the current administration that was not requested by the public. He noted that the conflict has contributed to a broader pattern of governance he characterized by specific terms.
"After two years of chaos and cruelty and corruption and incompetence, the likes of which we have not seen in the modern era, you get a chance to say, 'Enough is enough,'" Obama said. He urged local voters to use the November ballot to reject the current Republican leadership.
The rally also addressed a contentious issue in the Ohio gubernatorial race. Obama commented on an attack advertisement released by Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy. The ad featured Donna Arthur, the mother of Democratic candidate Amy Acton, who disputed her daughter’s account of childhood homelessness and sexual abuse by a stepfather.
Acton stated she has not seen her mother since 1978. Her brother supported her account of the abuse, and the stepfather, who died in 2004, was charged with rape. Obama defended Acton, noting that she has spoken movingly about her painful childhood, including abuse, neglect, and homelessness.
The former president shared the stage with Acton and Sherrod Brown, the former Democratic senator who is challenging incumbent Republican Senator Jon Husted. Recent polling indicates a two point lead for Democrats in both the gubernatorial and Senate races, though experts expect the final results to be close.
