The United States will hold its midterm elections on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. This vote determines the balance of power in Congress and the governorships of 36 states.

Americans will select all 435 members of the House of Representatives, 35 members of the Senate, and 36 governors. The results will also include state legislatures and local offices. The outcome decides which party controls the legislative agenda for the remaining two years of Donald Trump's presidency.

Public opinion surveys indicate a challenging environment for the incumbent party. A recent poll by NBC News and Telemundo shows that 60 percent of Americans disapprove of Trump's management, while 30 percent approve. The election takes place during a year defined by the war with Iran, concerns over artificial intelligence, energy price disputes, and rising living costs.

Democrats need to win four additional Senate seats to secure a majority. They must hold their current seats in states like Michigan, Georgia, and New Hampshire while taking four seats from Republicans. Senate winners serve six-year terms ending in January 2033. Republicans hold an advantage in the House, where Democrats need three more seats to reach the 218 required for a majority. Republican redistricting efforts have made this task harder.

Key battlegrounds include Texas, California, Ohio, Florida, Michigan, New York, and Pennsylvania. In the Senate, Democrats face a difficult path because they must win in several states that Trump carried by double-digit margins in 2024. In Michigan, former Representative Mike Rogers faces Democrat Abdul El-Sayed. Republicans aim to protect the seat of Senator Susan Collins in Maine and potentially win in other swing states.

The November 3 results will set the stage for the 2028 presidential race. If Republicans maintain control of states Trump won previously, they could constrain Democratic options for the next cycle. The specific margins of victory will influence how each party structures its future campaigns.

The vote serves as a direct assessment of the current administration's performance. It will determine whether the party in power can pass legislation, confirm judicial and administrative appointments, and manage the budget during the latter half of the term.
