The Duchess of Sussex has issued a formal statement confirming that she learned of serious allegations against her estranged father in 2018. This revelation comes as a central element of the new claims that Thomas Markle Sr. possessed child sexual abuse images. Her spokesperson stated that she is deeply distressed by the situation and has now clarified the sequence of events involving law enforcement.

The new information explains why Meghan Markle remained quiet for several years. Sources indicate that she was not able to speak publicly at the time because doing so might have jeopardized a future investigation or exposed her to legal action. The Metropolitan Police shared a letter with her shortly after her wedding. This letter had been sent to the Royalty and Specialist Protection unit and contained troubling details about her father.

In her statement, the duchess explained that the distance between herself and her father, including her decision to limit his contact with her children, was a protective measure. She trusted that authorities were handling the situation appropriately for the sake of other families. She expressed hope that justice will be fully served and that the safety of children remains the top priority in this ongoing matter.

The allegations resurfaced after the Sun newspaper reported that her half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., claimed to find a large stash of images in their father's former home in the Philippines. Markle Jr. told detectives that he found hundreds or thousands of images on devices stored in four boxes. Markle Sr. has strongly denied the accusations, calling them sick lies in an interview with the Daily Mail. He said he was shocked and hurt by the claims.

Official investigations are currently underway in the Philippines. An undersecretary at the justice department confirmed that a taskforce in Cebu is handling the case. The national police have secured Markle Sr.'s computer for a digital forensic examination. Officials expect the results of this analysis within one week. The FBI has also stated it will support the Philippine authorities and look into any federal violations of US law.

Markle Sr. is currently in a rehabilitation center in Florida. He is learning to walk with a prosthetic limb after a blood clot led to the amputation of his left leg. He noted that the computers were not in his possession since he moved to the Philippines in 2025. His half-sister, Samantha Markle, has also defended him, suggesting the claims were motivated by money and that the long gap in possession allows for tampering.

The family has been estranged since Markle Sr. missed the wedding on health grounds. He has never met his grandchildren, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. The Metropolitan Police is conducting internal inquiries to confirm if its officers were involved in passing the 2018 letter. The force has not investigated the father previously and is not doing so at present.
