Voters across the United States received a direct call to action from Jennifer Lawrence on Election Day. The actress used her social media platform to remind her 8.7 million Instagram followers to cast their ballots in the midterm elections. She posted a photograph of herself performing the three-finger salute associated with her character Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games films. The caption accompanying the image read, "Midterms [baby]. Don't forget who burns with us. Go vote." A link in the post directed users to Vote.org, a website where individuals can locate their nearest polling station.
Lawrence did not endorse any specific candidate in the post. The phrase "burn with us" references a scene from the 2014 film The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1. In that movie, Katniss addresses President Snow after a hospital bombing in her district. She states that fire is catching and warns that if the rebels burn, the Capitol burns with them. Many followers interpreted the post as a political statement, drawing parallels between the fictional leader and Donald Trump. Although Lawrence did not explicitly name Trump in the Instagram post, the symbolic connection resonated with fans of the franchise.
The actress has a history of public commentary regarding the president. During his first term, Lawrence wrote an op-ed stating that the election result meant white men were the only group in America that felt safe and that their rights were respected. Last year, she appeared to moderate her public stance. In an interview with The New York Times during the press tour for her film Die My Love, Lawrence questioned whether celebrities influence voting patterns. She noted that election after election, stars do not change who people vote for. She described her position as a complicated recalibration, explaining that she wanted to protect her craft so audiences could remain immersed in her art without being distracted by her political opinions.
Lawrence said she did not want to add fuel to a fire that was dividing the country. She added that unless she could offer peace or a solution, she did not want to make the problem worse. Since that interview, she has largely avoided political talk in media appearances. However, she maintained her engagement on Election Day itself. The timing of her post coincides with the upcoming release of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. Lionsgate will open the prequel in theaters on November 20. Lawrence will reprise her role as Katniss in the new film, returning to the part after an 11-year hiatus.
The actress spoke about her return to the set on the Call Her Daddy podcast last month. She described the experience as unbelievable, noting that the original crew reunited for the project. Co-stars Josh Hutcherson and Woody Harrelson also returned. Lawrence recalled that she and Hutcherson walked around with their arms around each other because the experience was so emotional. She joked that Harrelson entered her hotel room through the window without invitation. She added that the experience would not be the same if he respected boundaries or used the door.
