Tesla has confirmed the end of its Cybertruck ambitions for Australia and New Zealand, notifying reservation holders that the vehicle will not be produced for these markets. The company issued emails stating that after careful consideration, plans to produce the vehicle for the region have been discontinued. Consequently, all associated reservations are cancelled and payments made since late 2019 will be refunded.

The correspondence, which began circulating on social media and Reddit on October 23, 2026, outlines a clear path forward for those affected. Tesla has committed to processing full refunds for any deposits collected, with the money returned within 30 days. To encourage continued patronage, the automaker is offering a complimentary one-year subscription to FSD (Supervised) to any reservation holder who chooses to place an order for a new Model 3 or Model Y instead.

This announcement marks the conclusion of a lengthy and ultimately fruitless wait for customers in the region. Australian buyers began placing deposits of A$150 to reserve the pickup in November 2019, a period spanning nearly seven years of anticipation. The timeline of this cancellation also closely follows the release of Tesla's Q3 2026 earnings report.

The history of the Cybertruck in Australia has been marked by long periods of silence from the manufacturer. In May 2022, Tesla quietly disabled the reservation page for the region, replacing it with a button to get updates, but did not issue refunds at that time. Customers were left in limbo until today's notification. Earlier indications suggested a potential launch; in 2024, a Cybertruck was shipped to Australia for a display tour, and Elon Musk told shareholders that year, "We might be able to certify it for other markets sometime next year."

The primary obstacle to a regional launch has been the vehicle's left-hand-drive configuration. While Tesla has successfully launched the Cybertruck in left-hand-drive markets such as South Korea, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, it has not produced a right-hand-drive version. Furthermore, the European Union has blocked the vehicle largely due to pedestrian safety regulations.

Beyond the configuration issue, the current sales volume of the Cybertruck does not appear to justify the investment required for a new production line. Tesla delivered 8,295 units in the category that now comprises almost exclusively the Cybertruck during the third quarter of 2026. This figure represents a significant shortfall against the production line's capacity of 250,000 units annually.

The decision to abandon the Oceanian market reflects a broader reality regarding the vehicle's status. The Cybertruck has been relegated to a niche product, largely confined to North American roads. The company's international strategy is limited to finding buyers for existing left-hand-drive inventory rather than expanding the platform to new markets.

For those who held reservations, the cancellation brings a definitive end to years of uncertainty. While the refund is guaranteed, the offer of a software subscription for a different vehicle model stands as the only alternative provided by Tesla. The company has not indicated any plans to revisit a right-hand-drive version for these territories in the future.

In the meantime, Tesla's focus remains on its established markets and the models it produces in left-hand drive. The cancellation of Cybertruck plans for Australia and New Zealand closes a chapter that began with high hopes in 2019 but ended without a vehicle ever reaching the showroom floor.
