Downtown Corpus Christi prepares for a major cultural gathering as the city hosts its 19th annual Día de los Muertos Street Festival this Saturday. The event serves as the centerpiece of a broader weekend schedule that includes Halloween-themed activities and community fundraisers throughout the region. Organizers have planned a full day of programming to honor local traditions while offering diverse entertainment options for residents and visitors alike.
The free festival will occupy ten blocks in the downtown area, running from 1 p.m. until midnight. Attendees can expect live musical performances, artistic displays, and various food options alongside cultural presentations. A key feature of the event is the community ofrenda, a large altar designed to help families honor deceased loved ones. The holiday focuses on remembering these individuals and celebrating the lives they lived, providing a space for reflection and community connection.
In addition to the street festival, the Holiday Inn Downtown Marina will host the Villain Invasion Halloween Fest on both Saturday and Sunday. This two-day event allows attendees to meet actors from horror movies, participate in costume contests, and join gaming tournaments. The event also supports local food security efforts. Visitors who bring two nonperishable food items for the Coastal Bend Food Bank will receive a special edition event poster, provided that supplies remain available.
Pricing for the Villain Invasion weekend passes starts at $20, with free admission for children age 12 and under. Meanwhile, families seeking a more active way to spend Saturday morning can join the Monster Mash Cupcake Dash at Water's Edge Park. Participants may dress up and take part in a 5K run, a 10K run, or a two-mile walk. Every finisher receives a cupcake, and proceeds from the event support Family Counseling Services, which provides mental health care across the Coastal Bend.
For those preferring a quieter setting, Asbury Methodist Church offers family pumpkin painting from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Families can select and purchase a pumpkin to decorate together. The church's pumpkin patch will remain open to the public through the Halloween holiday, allowing for continued visits and purchases. This low-key option provides a relaxed alternative to the larger public gatherings planned for the weekend.
A new addition to the local calendar makes its debut this Saturday with Hocus Pocus Corpus. Held at the Hilliard Center from noon to 3 p.m., this free event features trick-or-treating, door prizes, and a community resource fair. The gathering also includes a specific presentation on renters' rights, aiming to inform residents about their legal protections. This new event adds a layer of civic engagement to the traditional holiday festivities.
