BYD is set to make a significant move in the global automotive market this month. The company confirmed that its new ultra-luxury electric sedan will have its global debut in the United Arab Emirates. This decision marks a strategic shift, as the vehicle will be introduced to international buyers before it becomes available in China. Yangwang general manager Hu Xiaoqing announced the plans this week, though the company has not yet provided a specific day for the launch event.

The new model is designed to be the largest and most opulent sedan in BYD's history. Its physical dimensions are comparable to the Rolls-Royce Phantom. Industry reports suggest the vehicle measures approximately 5,500 millimeters, or 216 inches, in length. This size places it firmly in the category of ultra-luxury executive cars. It aims to compete directly with established brands such as Rolls-Royce, Bentley, and Mercedes-Maybach.

This entry into the high-end market represents a stark contrast to BYD's public image. The company is widely recognized for producing affordable electric vehicles. A prime example is the Seagull, a small hatchback that costs less than $10,000 in China. By targeting the top tier of the luxury segment, BYD is signaling its ambition to cover the full spectrum of consumer needs. The move highlights a broader strategy to diversify its product lineup significantly.

Over the past few years, BYD has expanded its offerings across multiple vehicle classes. The company now sells entry-level electric cars, three-row flagship SUVs, pickup trucks, and electric supercars. Its corporate structure supports this diversity through several sub-brands. These include Denza, FangChengBao, and Yangwang, which operate alongside the main Dynasty and Ocean families under the BYD name.

Yangwang occupies the highest position in this brand hierarchy. It serves as a platform for showcasing the company's most advanced engineering and technology. Previous models from the brand utilized BYD's quad-motor e4 platform. That system generates 1,300 horsepower. The vehicles also featured the DiSus-X intelligent body control system. This technology allows the cars to perform unusual maneuvers, such as dancing, jumping, and driving on three wheels.

Hu Xiaoqing shared several images of the new sedan undergoing testing last month. The prototype was covered in camouflage, but its silhouette was clear to observers. The shape and size closely resembled a Maybach S-Class or a Rolls-Royce Phantom. Zheng Yu, the executive general manager of Yangwang, stated that the car will feature unprecedented disruptive technology. However, he did not provide specific details about what those technologies are.

Several technical features can be inferred from available evidence. The sedan was photographed at a BYD Flash Charging station. This suggests the vehicle will support megawatt flash charging capabilities. It also features rear-hinged coach doors, a design element new to the company. Reports indicate that this model will be the first to use BYD's solid-state batteries. Stella Li, the executive vice president, told Carwow.es last month that the first solid-state battery vehicle from BYD is expected to debut in 2027.

The official debut of the sedan is expected to take place within the current month. Rumors suggest the starting price will be in the range of 2 million yuan. This equates to approximately $300,000. This pricing position is significantly higher than the rest of the Yangwang lineup. The current U7 electric sedan starts at 658,000 yuan, or about $98,000.

The brand also offers the U8 and U8L plug-in hybrid luxury off-road SUVs, as well as the U9 electric super-coupe. The extended version of the U8, known as the U8L, is currently the highest-priced mass-produced vehicle in the brand's portfolio. It starts at 1.45 million yuan, which is roughly $217,000. The new sedan will sit above all these models in terms of cost and prestige.
