Brewers' Offensive Surge Puts Franchise on Cusp of First Championship
Milwaukee routed Tampa Bay 10-1 on Monday, leveraging a rookie pitcher's perfect game and a historic fifth-inning rally to take a 3-0 series lead.

The Milwaukee Brewers moved within one win of their first World Series title on Monday night by defeating the Tampa Bay Rays 10-1 at Tropicana Field. The victory extended Milwaukee's postseason winning streak to eight games, tying the major league record for a single postseason. The result leaves the Rays with an elimination game Tuesday night in front of a sold-out crowd of 40,388.
Rookie left-hander Robert Gasser anchored the pitching staff with a historic performance. He faced the minimum number of batters through six innings, allowing only one hit to Yandy Diaz in the first inning. Gasser retired the next 14 batters before Victor Mesa Jr. walked to begin the sixth. He became the first starter to face 18 batters through six innings of a World Series game since Curt Schilling in 2001. He also became the first left-handed pitcher to achieve this feat since Sandy Koufax in 1965.
The offensive explosion occurred in the fifth inning, where Milwaukee scored eight runs. This sequence set a World Series record for the most two-out runs scored in a single inning. The rally began after Christian Yelich walked and William Contreras reached on an infield single. A replay review overturned a forceout at second base, allowing the rally to continue. Brice Turang then hit a two-run single that bounced off shortstop Taylor Walls' glove. Garrett Mitchell, Cooper Pratt, and Sal Frelick followed with consecutive base hits to make the score 8-0.
Jackson Chourio drove in three runs and finished the game with four hits in five at-bats, including a stolen base. At 22 years old, he became the second-youngest player to record four hits and a stolen base in a World Series game, behind only Ty Cobb in 1908. Manager Pat Murphy credited Chourio with providing a major lift to the team. Chourio cited the discipline of basketball legend Kobe Bryant as an influence on his approach to the game.
Tampa Bay starter Freddy Peralta struggled against his former team. He allowed seven hits and five runs in 4 2/3 innings. Rays manager Kevin Cash described the team's approach as a chip-on-the-shoulder mentality, noting that they must win Tuesday to stay alive. The Rays have never won a World Series in 29 seasons, having lost to the Phillies in 2008 and the Dodgers in 2020.
The Brewers have dominated this postseason after leading the National League with 103 wins. They swept the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS. If they win Game 4, they will become the first team to sweep both the League Championship Series and the World Series since the 1976 Cincinnati Reds. The franchise, which moved from Seattle in 1970, last appeared in the World Series in 1982. Brandon Woodruff pitched the ninth inning for Milwaukee, allowing one run in his first appearance in three and a half months.
Griffin Jax is scheduled to start Game 4 for the Rays. The Brewers have not yet announced their pitcher. The game will be played at the renovated Tropicana Field, which underwent major repairs after Hurricane Milton damaged the roof in October 2024.
