Houston Astros fans will see a new face leading their baseball operations when Randy Flores assumes the role of general manager. The team confirmed the hire in a press release issued on Friday evening, marking a definitive end to the search for Dana Brown's successor.
Flores, 51, spent the last seven years with the St. Louis Cardinals. He joined the organization in 2015 as Director of Scouting and was promoted to Assistant General Manager in 2019. His front office tenure concludes this year, making him the most recent executive to leave that staff before moving to the Astros.
Before his management career, Flores played eight seasons in Major League Baseball as a left-handed pitcher. He pitched for the Cardinals, Texas Rangers, Colorado Rockies, and Minnesota Twins. After retiring from playing in 2012, he joined the University of Southern California baseball coaching staff in 2013, a role he held before returning to the Cardinals.
Astros owner and chairman Jim Crane praised Flores' experience in scouting and player acquisition. "Throughout the entire interview process, we've been thoroughly impressed with Randy and his background in scouting and player acquisition," Crane said. "We're happy to welcome Randy and his family to the Astros and we can't wait to get to work on bringing another championship to Houston."
Flores expressed gratitude for the opportunity to join a team with a history of success under Crane. "I am excited and grateful for this amazing opportunity," Flores said. "The Astros have a long winning tradition under Jim Crane and I look forward to contributing to the success."
Flores and Crane are scheduled to address the media at 10 a.m. Monday from Daikin Park.
