Apple breaks tradition with touch MacBook launch in LA
The company moves away from its traditional Cupertino venue for a short, invite-only presentation of its newest hardware.

Apple is hosting a launch event in Los Angeles on Tuesday to reveal a new MacBook Pro. The centerpiece of the announcement is expected to be a model with a touchscreen display. This will be the first time the company has put a primary touch interface on a Mac, excluding the small Touch Bar strip found on older models.
The move reverses a long-standing position held by Apple leadership. Executives have publicly questioned the utility of touchscreen laptops for over a decade. The company built its laptop line on the assumption that users primarily type and use a trackpad. The new hardware suggests that consumer demand for tap and swipe gestures has finally outweighed that internal philosophy.
The event is taking place at an off-site venue in Los Angeles rather than Apple Park in Cupertino. This location choice differs from Apple's standard practice for major hardware reveals. The presentation will be invite-only. There will be no public livestream available for those who did not receive a ticket.
The timing follows a rapid series of hardware releases this week. On Monday, Apple announced a new iPad Mini equipped with an OLED display. On Tuesday, the company issued updates to the M6 chip for the current MacBook Pro and iMac lines. Those chip upgrades were minor refinements that kept the existing physical design. The touchscreen reveal today is a structural change to the product line.
The format of the keynote is expected to be brief. A similar event in New York City earlier this year for the MacBook Neo featured an in-person speech lasting fewer than ten minutes. Attendees were then moved directly to a hands-on area to test the devices. Journalists at the current Los Angeles event are preparing for a similar workflow.
The physical layout of the room is designed for quick demonstration rather than a long stage presentation. Attendees will have access to the new hardware immediately after the short talk. This approach allows for immediate tactile feedback on the new screen technology.
The new MacBook Pro will join the recently updated M6-equipped laptops in the lineup. The touchscreen model will represent a distinct category within the Mac family. It will sit alongside the traditional keyboard-and-trackpad designs that have defined the brand for years.
