Cecilia Chavez manages a Facebook group with more than 224,000 followers that recently coordinated assistance for flood victims in San Antonio. The platform, known locally as 210 La Chismosa, originated during the 2020 pandemic when Chavez uploaded a video of a Zoom call with her mother and aunt. The clip captured the women exchanging local gossip, and the content quickly gained widespread traction.

Chavez described the shift from casual conversation to organized community support on Pickup Lines, a digital talk show hosted by KSAT’s Ernie Zuniga. She noted that managing the group requires constant vigilance. "You wake up to it, you go to sleep to it," Chavez said regarding the daily demand for attention from members.

The group’s recent focus on the Southwest Side floods represents a practical application of its reach. Chavez stated that helping these residents provides a renewed sense of purpose following the 2024 death of her son, Jose, in a motorcycle crash. "It filled a void. It did. It definitely did," Chavez said. "I want to help. I want to be there for people."

Chavez’s background includes growing up on San Antonio’s South and West sides. She contracted measles as a child, resulting in hearing loss in one ear. Her family later relocated to a Native American reservation in Nevada after a dispute over her son’s high school football eligibility. The move allowed her sons to play the sport, and one secured a college scholarship.

The administrator maintains that the group remains an independent entity. Chavez declined sponsorship opportunities to preserve that independence. She expressed a goal to open a community resource center in the future. The platform serves as a hub for information sharing and awareness among its large following.

Zuniga created Pickup Lines to feature guests from various walks of life. The show is recorded from his vehicle and includes topics ranging from business leadership to personal journeys. Chavez’s appearance added a local perspective on how social media can function as a tool for immediate community aid.

The transition from a family group to a public utility illustrates how digital spaces can evolve. Chavez credits her upbringing among strong Latina women for shaping her approach to leadership. The group continues to operate as a primary source of information for its members in the San Antonio area.
