Latvian National Armed Forces announced on Saturday, October 24, that they have recovered the debris of an unmanned aerial vehicle in the Alūksne district. The discovery concludes a search effort that had been suspended for six days following a brief initial investigation.

The military stated that the drone most likely crossed into Latvian airspace on Sunday, October 18. The incident initially triggered alerts after residents reported a noise resembling an explosion. Authorities from the National Armed Forces and the State Police launched a search for the crash site. They halted that effort after two days, citing insufficient data to determine what had occurred.

Officials confirmed that no civilians were injured during the event. Civilian infrastructure sustained no damage, and leadership has not identified any additional threats to the area. An internal review is now underway to examine the factors that allowed the aircraft to enter the country.

The incident follows a similar event in neighboring Lithuania. On October 18, wreckage from a suspected drone was located in the village of Juodžionys in the Pasvalys district. Lithuanian authorities stated the aircraft entered from Poland. Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius declared that the drone contained explosives.

Heorhii Tykhyi, spokesman for Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, attributed the Lithuanian incident to Russian electronic warfare measures. He added that Ukraine expressed regret over the occurrence.
